What Is GOTS Certification?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the leading worldwide standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. GOTS certification represents the most demanding organic standards that any product or manufacturer can meet.
Why Organic?
High levels of agrochemicals are used in the production of non-organic, conventional cotton. In fact, cotton production uses more pesticides and chemicals per unit area than any other crop. Many who have chemical sensitivities and those who want to decrease their exposure to potentially harmful chemicals prefer products made from organic cotton. Organic cotton also feels softer than conventional cotton because the cotton fibers are left intact and not broken down by the chemicals used in the farming and processing of non-organic cotton. Due to the fact that we spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping, surrounded by our sheets and bedding, many people invest in organic cotton bedding as their first organic cotton purchase.
Why Cotton?
Cotton is cool, comfortable, and feels good against the skin. It is known for its durability, and can tolerate repeated laundering cycles. It's versitale and able to be woven into a cool, crisp percale or a lusterous, smooth sateen. Cotton is a water loving fiber, and releases dirt easily when wet. It is a breathable material, and wicks moisture away from the skin. It is considered hypoallergenic, and rarely causes skin irritations or allergies. Cotton is not able to generate static electricity, and is relatively inexpensive for a natural fiber. Cotton is resistant to dust mites, is biodegradable and is a renewable resource. No "mystery fabrics" with cotton...you know what you're sleeping on!
Making Your Organic Mattress Protector Waterproof
While the fabric is GOTS certified organic cotton jersey, the waterproof polyurethane lamination is clearly not organic. However polyurethane is the cleanest, safest, and most durable water barrier available on the market today. It is 100% waterproof, breathable, inert, free of VOCs & PVC, burns clean, and doesn't off gas or leach chemicals. At this time it is impossible to have a 100% organic mattress protector that is also 100% waterproof and can withstand regular use and laundering over a long period of time. Organic wool mattress covers or similar products are only water resistant and will not provide 100% waterproof protection, which means if there's an accident or spill, it will eventually soak through to the mattress.
